Forge Your Own Tomahawk: A Hands-On Way to Celebrate America's 250th in Charleston

11 June 2026

Looking for a Fourth of July activity in Charleston that goes beyond fireworks and a bar crawl? This summer, Charleston Adventure Forest in Awendaw is offering hands-on, Revolutionary-era blacksmithing classes to celebrate America's 250th birthday. You can forge your own tomahawk every Friday and Saturday, or hand-dip candles and forge a matching candle holder on the first and third Sunday of each month, all running through September. No experience is required, every class is beginner- and family-friendly, and you leave with a handcrafted souvenir you made yourself. Here's the full schedule, who it's for, and how to book.

What is the America's 250th blacksmithing experience?

It's a hands-on class where you become the blacksmith. Using fire, hammer, and anvil, you learn a historic trade and forge your own metal keepsake to take home, guided every step of the way by an experienced instructor trained at the American College of the Building Arts.

This is more than a demonstration. It's your chance to participate in a craft that helped build early America, drawing on the same Lowcountry ironwork heritage made famous by Charleston artisans like Phillip Simmons. You don't need any experience, just curiosity and a willingness to try. The result is a challenge that feels achievable, rewarding, and genuinely unforgettable.

There are two ways to celebrate this summer: forge your own tomahawk, or join the Forge & Flame candle-making and candle holder workshop. New to the craft and want the background first? Read our guide on what blacksmithing is and where to learn it in Charleston.

Ready for Adventure?

"This was such a fun adventure. My 12 year old was initially scared, but our guides were fabulous and made her feel at ease. She was flying the trees confidently in no time. My younger two did the koala course at the same time and loved it as well. Since the canopy course over looks much of the koala course, we could watch them zip and even talk to them some. It was great! "
